The culture of Belize has a rich diversity, yet none of the components are dominant. It made up of a mixture of influences and people from Kriol, Maya, Garinagu (also known as Garifuna), Mestizo (a mixture of Spanish and Indian), Mennonites who are of German descent, with a blend of many other cultures. Belize has retained an old world charm long lost in most other countries. Belize has a tropical climate, although there are significant variations in weather patterns by region. Temperatures vary according to elevation, proximity to the coast, and the moderating effects of the northeast trade winds off the Caribbean. The Maya ruins of Belize include a number of well-known and historically important pre-Columbian Maya archaeological sites. Perhaps the most important, Caracol ('the snail' in Spanish), is located in western Belize, caracol was the center of one of the largest Maya kingdoms and today contains the extant remains of thousands of structures. The Flora and vegetation of Belize are highly diverse: In addition to the above there are numerous other important forest reserves such as, Chiquibul Forest Reserve (CFR). The Caribbean coast is lined with a coral reef and some 450 islets and islands known locally as cayes, pronounced "keys". Belize is home to the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere and the second longest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. Three of the four coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere are also located off the coast of Belize. Belize attractions include jungle with exotic plants and animals, fishing, swimming, diving in the sea with attractive reefs, and visiting Mayan ruins or relaxing on the wonderful beaches. |
