The Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest and most populous country in Latin America, and fifth largest in the world. Spanning a
vast area between central South America and the Atlantic Ocean, it is
the easternmost country of the Americas and it borders every South
American nation except for Ecuador and Chile. |
| Brazil is characterized by the extensive low-lying Amazon Rainforest
in the north, and a more open terrain of hills and low mountains to the south. Along the Atlantic seacoast are also found several mountain
ranges, reaching roughly 2,900 m high. Major rivers include
the Amazon, the largest river in the world by volume; the Paraná and its major tributary, the Iguaçu River, where the impressive Iguaçu falls are located.
Brazil's climate is predominantly tropical, with little seasonal variation, although the subtropical south is more temperate, and occasionally experiences frost and snow. Precipitation is abundant in the humid Amazon Basin, but more arid landscapes are found as well, particularly in the northeast.
Owing to Brazil’s continental dimensions, varied geography, history and people, the country’s culture is rich and diverse. It has several regional variations, some regions are so different from each other that they could have become different countries altogether. Brazil's cuisine is as varied as its geography and culture. While there are some quite unique dishes of regional origin, many foods were brought by overseas immigrants and have been hybridized through the generations. In Brazil, Italian and Chinese food can often be as baffling as Amazonian fare. |
